Directions
- Heat oven to 450°F. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Stir in milk until a soft, sticky dough forms and pulls away from the bowl.
- Lightly sprinkle flour on a surface and coat the dough by gently rolling in the flour. Fold and knead 10 times, turning after each fold, until smooth and springy.
- On the floured surface, flatten dough evenly, using hands or a rolling pin, until dough is 1/2 inch thick
- Dip a 2½ cutter in flour to prevent sticking, then cut biscuits close together without twisting. Place 1 apart for crusty sides or touching for soft sides on an ungreased sheet.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm
